Natural Remedies and Must-Have Ingredients to Reduce Cold Symptoms

Natural Remedies and Must-Have Ingredients to Reduce Cold Symptoms

No matter how “healthy” you are, there’s always a chance of getting a cold or flu. Some of us get sick more than others (me being one of them), so taking in various medications to bring the symptoms down can get pretty bad for the body over time. Personally, I stopped taking (most) over-the-counter medications a few years ago as I noticed they would cause a bit of stomach pain and over-drowsiness. Since then, I’ve come up with more natural ways to make me feel better when I’m sick. Of course, everyone’s bodies are different, so you have to go with what works best for you and obviously, these remedies don’t apply for feverish symptoms. My common cold symptoms tend to consist of a sore throat, runny nose and body/head aches. Luckily over time I’ve received helpful comments and messages from my followers with natural remedies that have worked for them. From that, I’ve created my own go-to remedies for you to refer back to anytime:

The Cup of Wellness

  • 1 full squeezed lemon
  • Fresh sliced ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey (I prefer Philosophie Superfood Honey)
  • 2 cups of water

Boil and let simmer. Increase or decrease ingredients for taste preference.

Honestly, I drink this even when I'm not sick. It tastes sooo good and makes me feel just as great any day. This is especially perfect when my throat is dry, itchy or sore.

The Shot (That Hurts So Good)

  • ½ squeeze of lemon
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 3 drops of oregano oil
  • 1 squeeze of super echinacea
  • 1 squeeze of valerian
  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

Throw it all in a little cup or jar and take it like a shot. This is basically my replacement for all medications. Let's briefly discuss all of these possibly unfamiliar, but amazing ingredients. Oregano oil is often replaced with antibiotics due to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Echinacea is a natural herb that has been used for medicinal purposes for quite some time now that helps reduce inflammation. Valerian root is also a natural herb that helps calm down the nervous system, helping you feel more relaxed and can decrease head/body ache symptoms.

P.S. Most of these ingredients can be found at Whole Foods.

Other Necessities:

  • The three teas below are a must when you don't have time to make anything but need something to help you out. These will have you feeling cozy in no time.
  • I always always have my Saje Wellness essential oil diffuser going with eucalyptus oil. It really helps me feel like I'm breathing in fresh, crisp air.

Happy Healing! xo
