Conscious New Year

Conscious New Year

As you finish up the last few days of 2016 and prepare for 2017, reflect on any intentions you have set for yourself. Sometimes we set intentions without an established plan. We know what we want, but knowing HOW is the truest determinant of success in creating the year you want. How will you start it? How will you keep it? How will you hold yourself responsible if you start to drift from the intention? How will you bring yourself back when you have drifted? These are important questions for any intention, whether it’s physical or mental. Eat healthier, decrease procrastinating, exercise more, develop patience, stay motivated, save money, find love, get organized, etc. Whatever your intention is, one important factor can mediate the success: CONSCIOUSNESS.

Entering the New Year with conscious intention, self-awareness and insight will allow you to approach your intention in the best way possible. There’s no better way to prepare yourself for life changes than to get to know yourself more. Knowing your weaknesses and strengths while letting go of judgment and being self-compassionate will go a long way. That is the key to success in cultivating change, which, of course, always begins within. Through consciousness, you can begin, maintain and bring yourself back to your intention at any moment.

So, how exactly do you use consciousness when setting an intention?

How will you start it? Ask yourself, "Why?" Why have you decided on that specific intention? What is it that is motivating you or what has opened your eyes in deciding to make this change? What are you hoping to get from this intention? Make a list and keep that list somewhere to refer back to.

How will you keep it? Be honest with yourself. Get to know your strengths and weaknesses. The best way to do this is through meditation, especially mindfulness and healing meditations. Take time to explore yourself so you can be equipped to respond to your own actions in the best way possible.

How will you hold yourself responsible if you start to drift from it? Check In. If you're not sure, perhaps it's time for more meditation so that you can connect with who you are and build awareness toward yourself. Get back into it by deepening your meditation practice and reminding yourself of the purpose of your intention.

How will you bring yourself back when you have drifted? Start from the beginning. As many times as it takes, start back from the beginning. Take out the same list of reasons and rewrite it or add more. Take time to be with yourself so that you know what it is that's happening inward that is holding you back from moving forward. Take time to check in with yourself.

Remember to stay aware, let go of judgment and be self-compassionate.

Happy New Year! See you in 2017 :)
